Dove launches TikTok campaign to protect young girls from anti-ageing product pressures

‘The Gen A Anti-Ageing Talk’ will help parents and carers discuss how to talk to young people about anti-ageing and beauty anxiety.

Dove recently announced its new TikTok campaign, #TheFaceof10, to unite to protect young girls’ self-esteem from anti-ageing skincare pressures.

In this day and age, more and more young girls are being exposed to adult skincare content, forcing them to adopt societal pressures and unnecessary anti-ageing skincare regimens before entering adulthood.

Dove research revealed that nearly 1 in 2 young girls, aged 10 to 17 years of age, expect to worry more about their appearance as they age, while 1 in 3 young girls are expected to have cosmetic work or plastic surgery to alter their appearance as they get older.

In collaboration with academic experts, dermatologists, creators, body confidence advocates and more, Dove’s new campaign aims to highlight the significance of the issue and raise awareness of it through creative, impactful content, portraying inclusive faces that represent #TheFaceofTen.

Dove calls for guidance on what is age-appropriate for young skin, so that young girls are prevented from misusing and glorifying adult-targeted anti-ageing products.

With Dove, Dr Phillippa Diedrichs, a Research Psychologist at the Centre of Appearance Research, University of West England and body image expert and certified dermatologist Dr Marisa Garshick have created ‘The Gen A Anti-Ageing Talk’ to discuss how to talk to young people about anti-geing and beauty anxiety.

“If young girls feel pressure to use skincare products containing highly active anti-ageing ingredients, it could be damaging to their body confidence and self-esteem in the long term, not to mention their skin health,” said Dr Phillippa.

Pinned to Dove’s TikTok channel for parents and carers to access, the company stated that 10-year-old girls “should be covered with more glitter, stickers and face paint” as opposed to “retinol and inappropriate anti-ageing skincare ingredients and products”.

Firdaous El Honsali, Global Vice President, Dove, commented: “We believe beauty should be a source of happiness, not anxiety.

“For two decades, we have taken action to build confidence and self-esteem for millions of girls.”

Honsali continued: “Today, our girls are anti-ageing before they’ve even started to grow up and need us more than ever.”
